Call me a freak, but I get a little attached to things. I don't consider myself materialistic, but things that I use quite often, remind me of memories. I guess it can be similar to certain songs played- takes you back to a certain moment, or person. Or maybe even a smell- reminds you of your grandmother, or a season. Or if none of this makes sense to you, maybe I am a freak, but this is my blog and I'll do whatever the heck I want.
I'll start with Howie. When I met him, he was driving a black '86 Toyota that had a lift kit and KC lights. It looked identical to Marty's in Back to the Future. It was a nice truck. We went mudding in it together, he took me to dances, and to Wendy's, and to work. We went to Utah in it a couple of times. It was a good truck. I knew he just might like me when he asked me to move 'his baby' into the parking garage if it started raining (we were at his old girlfriend's place, but apparently she didn't know how to drive a stick.) It was in that truck, on the way home from Utah, that I told Howie that I liked him. And he said he liked me, too. (Okay, I'll move on.)
One day, I was in New York, and he was in Idaho. We were engaged to be married. It was 2002. His truck had major issues, so he was trading it in. He asked if I'd prefer a Pontiac Sunfire, or a Dodge Neon. Both were 1999's, red, same mileage, and price. I thought Neon's looked a little too 'buggy', so I went for the sportier Sunfire.
That Girl took us to Kansas and back a few times, to Las Vegas, to Nauvoo, Illinois, and to Arizona. About 6 months after we got married, we bought a blue Ford F150 from my Dad. Howard needed a work truck. I had driven that truck in high school, and was happy to have it in the family still. However, it was a beast, and one day, we decided to trade it in for a green and silver Dodge truck. A few months later, Howie had a 4 month internship to do in Glendale, Arizona, so we loaded up the car, and truck (put the Sunfire on a dolly), and headed out. It was December 30, 2004. Three days after arriving in Arizona, our beautiful pick-up was stolen right out of the parking lot of our apartment complex- in broad daylight! It was not recovered (until 5 months later), so we got the insurance money, and bought this lovely Silver 2002 Dodge, and brought him back to Idaho.
We were a two car family, and there were 4 people in our home. It stayed this way until 2011. In late 2010, we had another baby. We thought we might still be able to make do in our little sunfire. But by this time, the odometer stopped working, the air conditioning was non-existant, and the gas gauge would go to half- and then go back up to full again--without filling the tank. We made it work for 6 months. By then, we knew it was time- time for something bigger.
And that's when we found this BEAUTY! A Buick Terrraza- a sporty looking vehicle that doesn't look too minivan-ish, but isn't a gas guzzeling SUV. Leather interior, low miles, dvd player with wireless headphones, a back-up sensor, remote start..it is a lovely thing.
And that is the end of our family car history.
